About the 20 Hour SAFE Comprehensive Mortgage Loan Originator Course

On July 30, 2008, the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008 (HERA) was signed into law by President George W. Bush, marking a significant component of mortgage reform. It included the Secure and Fair Enforcement Act (SAFE) that established national minimum standards for mortgage prelicensing and continuing education. The Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System (NMLS) is served with the responsibility of registering every mortgage loan originator (MLO) in the United States.

Federal and state laws require that state-licensed mortgage loan originators complete NMLS-approved pre-licensure education at an NMLS-approved school. Larson Educational Services is a Florida-based NMLS-approved school - NMLS PROVIDER ID: 1400171 and NMLS COURSE ID: 1181.

Course Structure

The curriculum development team at Larson Educational Services has developed this course to include the mandated hours and topics and to reflect the body of information required for an entry-level mortgage loan originator.

At the conclusion of this course, you will be armed with the knowledge to legally, safely and efficiently serve the needs of today’s borrowers and lenders in real estate financing transactions.

The course workbook combines detailed text, student notes, and sample questions. The content has been determined to be appropriate with respect to satisfying pre-licensure education as required by the SAFE Act. The course is updated as necessary to reflect ongoing changes within the mortgage industry.

Key Objectives of the Course by Unit

Unit 1: Federal Law and Regulations
In Unit 1 you will learn to operate legally within strict guidelines and specifications of 17 Federal laws.

Unit 2: Standards for Non-Traditional Mortgage Products
In Unit 2 you will learn the standards for 15 different non-traditional mortgage products.

Unit 3: Mortgage Loan Originator Practices
In Unit 3 you will learn to originate loans through an understanding of Conventional loan types and the qualifying process.

Unit 4: Mortgage Loan Originator Processes
In Unit 4 you will learn to originate loans through an understanding of credit, loan documentation and the loan application process.

Unit 5: Ethics in the Mortgage Industry
In Unit 5 you will learn how to operate legally and ethically as loan originators through their understanding of mortgage fraud, Federal credit laws, appraisal fraud, ethical considerations, and fair lending issues.
